The escalation of humanitarian crises has steadily increased over the past years, reaching 339 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and protection globally in 2023. This included 186.9 million people in need of life-saving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) assistance for those facing complex and protracted conflict and displacement, climate-related disasters and shocks, and large-scale public health emergencies.

In 2023, the Global WASH Cluster (GWC) remained committed to ensuring effective and accountable humanitarian coordination for people affected by crises. The GWC continued to advocate for the importance of humanitarian WASH coordination through thought leadership and by promoting collective outcomes through "joined-up" action among humanitarian, development, and peace actors.

The report also delves into key achievements made by the GWC to extend robust support on field operations, capacity and learning, knowledge management, evidence-based advocacy, and performance monitoring to National Coordination Platforms (NCPs). All information on working groups, and key collaborations such as the WASH Insecurity Analysis and more can also be found in this edition.
