First Edition of the GWC Newsletter 2024

Publication: 24 Jan 2024

Welcome to the first edition of the Global WASH Cluster Newsletter in 2024. In this update, we bring you a rich and diverse array of news and key updates from National Coordination Platforms (NCPs), GWC members, and partners such as UNICEF, IASC, USAID, OXFAM, OECD, CAWST, and ICRC.

2023 ends with yet another hopeful outlook. While it was a year characterized by immense humanitarian challenges and a strong appeal for response to emergencies — devastating earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye, conflicts erupting in Sudan, and a catastrophic war in Israel and the Occupied Palestine Territory — we are looking towards a more positive 2024.

Despite the unresolved conflicts, instability, climate-related issues, outbreaks and diseases, and economic inequality, the unwavering support and continued collaboration of our partners ensure that there will be no gap in extending humanitarian assistance to priority emergency areas. This said, NCPs are and will always be at the core of responding collectively to crises. Key NCP features this month include the Intersectoral Manual on Humanitarian Response for WASH, Nutrition, Health and Food Security (in French) of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as the Response Report and Analysis of the WASH Cluster Yemen in 2023, and the 2024 WASH Cluster Strategy and Indicators Handbook for Ukraine.

Also in this edition are updates from GWC Accountability and Quality Assurance (AQA) Initiative and on operational support in Sudan, Libya, and Iraq. Plus, some new faces of the GWC!
