For the GWC and SWA, the conference Water Action Decade theme is a strategic opportunity to advocate for and commit to a collective humanitarian and development action. It also creates a very powerful culminating moment to build partnerships and donor engagement. We invite member states and decision-makers at the UN Water Conference to use the following initiative on collective outcomes and position the WASH sector as a catalyst and thought leader to operationalize the modalities of these joint commitments and further act upon them.

Note that the GWC is also involved in the following events from key partners and highly encourages participation and representation from humanitarian actors and others:

advocacy note

The joint advocacy note reinforces the need for core coordination and collaboration principles. It also proposes a key way forward for collective action between humanitarian, development, and, where relevant and appropriate, peace actors. The following priority areas outline how we can jointly reduce people’s humanitarian needs, risks, and vulnerabilities by working towards ‘collective outcomes’ (as outlined by IASC):
  1. Joint analysis or sharing of analyses to obtain a shared understanding of need, risk and vulnerability.
  2. Articulation of ‘collective outcomes’ or priority areas based on the areas of greatest need, risk and vulnerability.
  3. Joined-up planning and programming in support of these collective outcomes or priorities.
  4. Financing that is aligned or harmonized around these collective outcomes or priorities.
The note also highlights a key call to action for governments, member states, and key stakeholders to make this collective effort the humanitarian-development divide. Read more here on the GWC commitments and key advocacy messages.

For National Coordination Platforms - we highly encourage you to engage your respective government counterparts to voice the key messages around coordination and collective outcomes at the UN-Water conference, as well as with key stakeholders and decision-makers in your country. You can adapt the advocacy template and use the toolkit below to your needs and contextualize your messages, it will make the case even stronger at the UN water conference.

For GWC Members and other partners - we highly encourage you to attend the GWC / SWA event and to echo the advocacy note with your representatives at the senior management level or any stakeholders within your organization interested or likely to have an influence in the UN Water 2023 conference.

We invite all to use GWC UN Water advocacy template and its comms toolkit and adapt it to your context or simply echo these messages to your government counterparts, key stakeholders in-country, or senior management. You can also find us and engage with us before and during the conference on Twitter here.
